It achieved fame in 1526 as the capital of the Mughal emperors and is a major tourist destination because of its many splendid Mughal-era buildings. Taj Mahal is the most beautiful structure made from white marble, carved to perfection with semi-precious stones. Taj Mahal is one of the three heritage sites in Agra. Built by Shah-Jahan for his favorite wife Mumtaz Mahal, it took 22 years and around 20,000 workers to erect this marvel. Other prominent tourist attractions in Agra are the Agra Fort (sometimes called the Red Fort), Fatehpur Sikri, I'timad-Ud-Daulah and Sikandra (Akbar‘s Tomb). Agra hosts a cultural festival called "Taj Mahotsav", it is celebrated every year from 18 to 27 February at Shilpgram near the Eastern gate of "Taj Mahal".
